🚨 Common Horse Scams to Watch Out For
- Shipping scams: Seller claims to be abroad and asks you to pay shipping costs before you can see the horse. This is always a scam — never send money without viewing first.
- Upfront payment requests: Never pay a deposit or full payment before viewing the horse in person at its actual location.
- Prices too good to be true: A €15,000 showjumper listed for €800 is almost certainly fraudulent. If it seems too cheap, trust your instincts.
- Pressure to pay quickly: Legitimate sellers don't use artificial urgency. Phrases like "I have three other buyers" or "you must pay today" are red flags.
- Unverifiable sellers: Be cautious of sellers with no local presence, no yard address, or who refuse to speak on the phone.
- Fake transport/insurance companies: Scammers sometimes invent middlemen companies that request additional payments after the initial "purchase".
✅ Safe Buying Checklist
- 🔍 Research the horse online — search the name, microchip number, and seller contact details for red flags
- 📞 Speak by phone first — not just WhatsApp or email. Verify the seller is genuine and based in Ireland
- 👁️ View in person before committing — insist on visiting the horse at its actual yard, not a neutral location
- 📋 Check the passport — all horses in Ireland must have a valid EU horse passport. Verify it matches the horse's microchip
- 🔢 Scan the microchip — bring a reader or ask the vet to scan it and confirm it matches the passport
- 🩺 Get a pre-purchase vetting — hire an independent vet (never one recommended by the seller)
- 💸 Pay safely — bank transfer only after viewing in person. Use a solicitor for high-value purchases
- 📑 Get a signed receipt — include seller's name, address, phone, horse description, microchip number, price and date
- 🐾 Transfer passport ownership — legally required under SI 601/2014. Contact your Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO)
🐴 Horse Passport & Legal Requirements in Ireland
Under Irish law (SI 601/2014 — the Horse Passport Regulations), all horses, ponies, and donkeys must have a valid passport. When you buy a horse:
- The seller must hand over the original passport at the time of sale
- You must transfer the passport into your name with the relevant Passport Issuing Organisation within 30 days
- Never buy a horse without a passport — it is illegal to sell a horse without one
Passport Issuing Organisations in Ireland include the Irish Horse Register (IHR), Horse Sport Ireland (HSI), and the Connemara Pony Breeders' Society (CPBS).
